As the hottest months of the year quickly approach, one of the most important components you can have is a proper cooling system for your home. A good cooling system will ensure you and your household remain comfortable and cool no matter how hot it gets outside. However, there are more options to choose from than your standard air conditioning unit, so it’s crucial to find the right cooling type for you. In this article, you will learn how the most common types of cooling systems work.

Central Air Conditioning System

This type of cooling system is the most common in households across the country. Central AC works by pulling in warm air from your house via a fan and air ducts. It then passes through filters that remove pollutants and dust before passing over the cold evaporator coil. The liquid refrigerant absorbs heat, changes it into a gas, and cools the air. A fan then engages and sends the cool air throughout the house.

Heat Pump

When in cooling mode, heat pumps and air conditioners are virtually identical. A common misconception is that air conditioners cool your home by producing cool air, but this is not true. The reality is that air conditioners cool your home by removing heat energy from warm air, pumping it away and outside of your home. This is essentially what a heat pump does in cooling mode. Similarly, heat pumps do not produce warm air but rather redistribute heat within or away from the house. When comparing the fiscal efficacy of heat pumps versus air conditioners, the cost and capabilities are evenly matched.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning System

While much more compact than other AC systems, ductless mini-splits can offer the same cooling capabilities to smaller spaces and areas in your home. Mini-splits operate on the same principles of conditional AC systems but without a separate indoor and outdoor unit. Mini-splits are usually installed on walls with an attached exterior unit with vents to expel warm air away from the home.

Room/Window Air Conditioning System

Sometimes your house can remain too hot even if you have a centralized cooling system. In this case, a window air conditioning system may be the right fit. As the temperature in a room rises, it triggers the thermostat in the window unit to turn on. The unit then begins to pull in warm air from the room and pass it over cool refrigerant coils before sending the cooled air back into the room.

There’s a lot to consider when picking the right cooling system for your home, so it’s best to learn about the benefits of different systems before you make any decisions.
